Three Speaker Amp?

Post by seth_lorinczi »

Hi there,

A friend has offered to sell me an older three speaker Rickenbacker amplifier. I don't know anything about its age or model, other than that it has three 8" or 10" speakers and is finished in tan tolex-type material. Can anyone tell me anything about this amp and its worth?

Thanks much!

Seth: From your description your have a Model 98 Rickenbacker amplifier. It should have five tubes and three 8 inch Jensen speakers along with two control panels, a top and rear. It was covered with a grained Stag Gray or as you note Blond tolex-type. Its overall dimensions should be 25 X 13 1/2 X 9 3/4 inches.

How about sending along a couple of detailed photos, inside and out, from all angles.

I bet that would sound good. I'd also like to see it.

Thanks much you guys...I'd love to send pictures but I haven't yet committed to buying it! I'm leaning towards "yes," but I have no idea of its value. Anyone have a guess?

Thanks much,
Seth

Seth: I have never seen this amp up for sale before. Perhaps someone else has noticed one on eBay that I missed. Rickenbacker models of this vintage have been selling in the $300 to $450 US range. You would want to inspect it closely inside for corrosion and give it a test drive.

Here it is, finally. Sadly, the Jensens are gone, but the rest seems to be original!Image

Interesting that it is made like the first Bassman amp, with the amp in the bottom and an umbilical cord to the separate control panel on top, cool!

Yes, very tidy in general in there. I'm thinking of trying to get the original speakers back in. Peter specifies they are Jensen Specials...anyone know anything else about them?

I assuming you're the new owner, Seth?

If you want to sell it. . . let me know.

No, thanks much though. It was a gift from a friend, plus I know it's kind of an oddball so I think I'll hang on to it....

A gift? Oh! I thought you originally wrote he offered to sell you. Not that it matters, really.

And I certainly wasn't clear in my previous post; I figured you'd be keeping the amp for a while. But, if somewhere down the line you decide to. . . ;-)
