I'm trying to track down some info on the 4001 Rickenbacker Bass I have. I am curious to know whether there is anything particularly special or collectable about it because it doesn't have any white trim, but is rather all black accept for a thin strip of white trim along the neck nearest the fret board. The serial is UJ/3706, apparently it is an 80-81 Bass, is there anything you could tell me about this model or where I might find some precise information about it?
Cheers in advance...

Do you also have a black surround around your bridge positioned pickup or is it chrome? If it is black, that is a 4001 Blakstar bass. If it is chrome, probably someone just put a black pickguard on it.
Anyways, I'm still learning more about these instruments as I go, but I do think the Blackstar basses are in limited quantity. I also know they were made as 4003's also. About how much it's worth, I can't help you there. Maybe someone else can help you fill in the blanks.

It's a chrome surround, thanks for the helpful info though it makes things interesting thats for sure. The only other thing that makes me think it's a different model though is that the normal Black and White trim 4001's have has the white trim running right around the edge of the body, doesn't it? This one does not have any white trim at all but for where I specified it.
Sounds like you've got a 4001 with black binding.
Your bass might have been a different color when it left the factory and has since been refinished black. This is one possibility.
Most likely a previous owner of your bass changed the pickguard to black to give it the look of the Blackstar and Shadow.
Blackstars and Shadows were 4003 models that were introduced between 83-86. Blackstar's were a limited run of 200 basses.
There's a great article on RIC basses on the Rickenbacker Page (this site) under articles by David Axt. It clearly explains the differences between every RIC bass made.
Cheers
