what bass would compliment my 4003? A 4001 maybe? What would be different?
If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.

What kind of music do you play, Ron? That might dictate the choice a little more...
A 4001 and 4003 are very similar, a little different voicing, different features, but it's basically an update of the 4001. Maybe a 4004....that's a different animal, but still a Rickenbacker.

Ron,
the "V" basses are reissues of older 60's basses, a 4080 is a doubleneck guitar/bass, a 4000 is a single (bridge) pickup 4001, a 4005 is a hollowbody bass made until around 1984-ish...a 4002 is a rare one, it's got a low-impedence output and really figured wood (beauty!), the s5 is a 5-string, the s8 is an 8-string. The 3000 and 3001 and 2030 are bolt-on models that some people swear by, but have a different sound than the 4001, but still sound like a Ric.
I think for 70's rock, stick with the one that brung 'ya! The 4001 is the beast. If you are playing 70's rock, play the bass it was played on!
If you look around the site, there are plenty of pictures of all of these models here.

Ron,
I played a 4001 for over 20 years, and then went to a 4003 in 1996. Up till last week I played my 4003 exclusivley, and then got myself a lovely 4001-v63.
The v63 is differnt in play and tone, but still very definitley a Rick. I agree with Steve, 4001 is one of the hallmarks of the 70's, I'd say go for it. !!!
