MY favorite Pauly bass line

Post by beatlefan »

Ok.....being a Beatle fan for a looonnngggg time, I've always said I can't choose a "favorite" Paul bassline...but I've changed my mind....after getting the new Capitol releases with mono AND stereo, my vote goes to the song I've suspected was my favorite all along....."I Saw Her Standing There" !!

What you have to notice is how you can hardly see Pauls left hand moving as he's playing it....amazing!!

There, I said it!! I hate saying "that's my favorite" , but that bassline is SO fantastic the whole way thru the song and is so energetic....it's timeless and still gets my blood boiling to this day!! ....AND it's fun to play!!

...my two cents

I play that one and sing it in a band. It's hard to define exactly what Paul's doing, at least on the CD I have. He could be playing:

EEE F# E A G# A F#, EEE F# E A G# A F#, or he could be doing just:

EE F# A G# A F#, etc. I don't think he's adding all the notes in the first example. It may be Ringo's bass drum that's adding the ghost bass notes.

It tool me a while to perfect playing that one and singing it at the same time. I have a worse time with "All My Loving" and "Day Tripper" especially.

I think actually that's one of the easier McCartney songs to sing and play bass with, the line is simple and repetitive, that's what I need. The basic line is: EEG#EBBAG# all an octave up from low E and repeat, he does skip notes here and there. It's quick though.

It is a cool bass part and fun to play. But I like the All My Loving walking bass line a tab bit better. I've often wondered how he came up with that one while doing the lead vocal.

And Your Bird Can Sing. This song made me buy a bass (Hofner) and try it myself. Nowadays I often put little pieces of that bass line into the songs of my band (has anyone noticed?) :o)

All My Loving is fairly easy to sing and play at the same time too. I think most of his early songs had lines that were simple and made a lot of sense. That's a simple walking line. I have trouble singing with synchopated (sp?) lines. (unless that stuff is just so much a part of me from listening to it for 40 years)

A few days ago I was listening to the Yellow Submarine CD playing my V63 together...well, the bass line in Only a Northern Song clearly shows that Paul must have been under LSD influence while recording that song J
No one had played that way before and probably afterwards J
In that case "God bless the LSD" J
Hey Bulldog is gorgeous too... and the sound of his 4001 is terrific... It's too bad that in modern records no bass guitar has "that" sound anymore...Maybe it depends on the modern equalization rates or just because of new speakers which sound different.….

My fav... "Michelle" hands down. Never heard anyone use a bass to play a melody line until I heard that song...

Blew my little 13 year old mind way back when...

I always thought Sgt. Pepper's was the pinnacle of his bass playing - front to back.

Alot of people say that was his Ric bass, no?

yes.... IMHO the period between Rubber Soul and Magical Mystery Tour is the best of his bass playing.... and the fact he started using the rick instead of the hofner helped him to develope his new style of playing
