Hi-Gains and Toaster Tops

I guess I'm pretty clueless, but what is the difference in sound between a hi-gain and vintage toaster top pickup? I'm really going for a JL sound and have found a guitar like his for a good price but it has hi-gains! Will hi-gains get me a good, Rick jang?
