Flatwound question again

Post by jimd »

Never tried them, time to replace the Ric rounds.
Which set of flatwounds to purchase for a v63? I don't want to file the nut slots just to try them.

From a 20 year V63 owner - replace them with another set of RIC rounds! I tried flats on my V once and that last a day or two. I either use RIC strings or DR Lo Riders. thats just my opinion

cheers!

D'Addario Chromes work real nice on a V63. That is what I use on mine. Thomastics and Pyramid flats I've heard are real good though I've never used them on mine. The Chromes sound great and are affordable, and will fit the nut just fine. I've never had a problem with them. I use the 45-100 guage.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

I tried Pyramids on my v63, didn't care for the sound or their feel, so went back to Rounds, Ernie Ball Super Slinkies.

Thomastik Infeld (TIs) Flats sound great and have a good feel, but it's all a matter of opinion.

I have Chromes (40-55-75-95) on all my RICs, nice ballsy, growly tone. I don't miss the roundwounds at all.

TI jazz for my Ricks (although I don't have a v63.) I put them on my 67 4005 and on my 4003s8 because I wanted the lower tension and I put them on my 76 4001 because they just feel and play so well...hard to describe, but I say "kind of spongy" but with a grip. If your use to rounds you might hate em but I went flat and'll never go back. Oh, and they(flats) are soo much kinder to your frets than rounds

If you like comparatively high tension try Pyramids or Fenders lights or med. lights. Those are traditional sounding flats, if you want bright go with the Chromes, they have a very nice feel to them. Ti's are also nice, they don't have a lot of thump though and are very low tension. I like the sound of them though, great for Mersey sound.
You're going to have to widen the A and D slots with just about any string you buy because the originals are .75 and .55, although maybe TI's are smaller diameter, I don't know.

I've tried TI's and didn't care much for them, to floppy. Chromes are nice, also I have LaBella's on my 4003, nice warm sounding, and Pyramids on my c64. I really like the Pyramids.
Pyramids are brighter than the Labella's, but not as bright as the Chromes IMO.
Buy it before someone else does.

Just re-strung my new 4003 with Pyramids, expensive but worth every penny IMHO. Pick of the Ricks has the best price by far.

Chromes on my '97 4003. Nice feel, somewhere between Fender flats and TIs for tension.

Fender Nickel rounds on the '75.

So I have a bass with thump and a bass with clank.

And, the cap is removed from the '75.
