String gauge question
In the new Rickenbacker user manual it states that all 4 string basses ship with .40-.95 gauge strings while under String types on the Rickenbacker website is says all 4 string basses are shipped with .45-.105 gauge strings. My 4003 was made last June and I would like to establish what gauge strings were put on it at the factory. Any ideas?

yeah, the new manual is available here:

I think it came out in December.

I don't think that's new, but regardless, where do you see 040-095 in that guide? I see the chart on page 6 of the .pdf but it shows 040-105 for 4 string basses, SKU 95510. The old booklet type manual shows 045-105, SKU 95511. Both are shown in the price list on the website, but The Rickenbacker Page, North Coast Music and Rhoads Music just carry the 95511 set.

Dave,
The Ric site has had a set of Nickel strings advertised for ages that are 40-55-75-95 part number 95510.
Below that is another set at 45-55-75-105 part number 95511, ergo potentiial confusion !!!
Owners manuals say 45-55-75-105. I'd say either set is ok. I've always tended toward the lighter set though.

"It's Red Jim, but not as we know it...."
Robert: yes, they are different, but as I said, they're both in the current price list. I don't know when the change was made, but my newest 4003 (made in the first half of 2003) has an 040 G string -- I just measured it.*
But if you want the set with the 040 G it looks like you'll have to order it from RIC because the regular string stocking dealers don't seem to carry that set.
*No, it's not still on the bass, I maintain a retirement home for old strings.
