Rickenbacker Redneck 8-string?

Post by modelcitizen »

I picked up a used Ric 4008S a little while ago, and have never found out much about it.
You see, it looks like a Redneck - blood red body, neck & fingerboard, dot markers, no binding, black hardware, toaster pickup in the neck - but apparently Rednecks were only a 4-stringer. Huh?
Serial number is A199160 , which is Jan '88.
Does anyone have any info on this puppy?

Also, has anyone out there with a 4008 modified the bridge/nut to reverse the strings? (so the octave string is *above*)

RIC certainly made a 4003S/8 Redneck. Here's a pic of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell each holding Rednecks.Image

Where would I find numbers produced, etc? For insurance purposes, is this a "rare" bass or an oddity?

Certainly is "rare" and an oddity :-) RIC may know the numbers produced. Get in touch with RIC customer service and ask them if they could help you. Who knows?
