I picked up a used Ric 4008S a little while ago, and have never found out much about it.
You see, it looks like a Redneck - blood red body, neck & fingerboard, dot markers, no binding, black hardware, toaster pickup in the neck - but apparently Rednecks were only a 4-stringer. Huh?
Serial number is A199160 , which is Jan '88.
Does anyone have any info on this puppy?

Also, has anyone out there with a 4008 modified the bridge/nut to reverse the strings? (so the octave string is *above*)

RIC certainly made a 4003S/8 Redneck. Here's a pic of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell each holding Rednecks.

Where would I find numbers produced, etc? For insurance purposes, is this a "rare" bass or an oddity?

Certainly is "rare" and an oddity RIC may know the numbers produced. Get in touch with RIC customer service and ask them if they could help you. Who knows?
