1970 381 at Elderly

Post by ken_j »

Elderly recently listed a '70 381 on their web site. I checked it over the weekend and it wasn't there so it is very recent. Nice quilted MG. here's the link:

"Original born to be wild guitar?" Don't take it literally.

Beautiful figuring! Looks like it has potential intonation problems--see the saddles and how close they are to the bridge. Time for an Ed Roman plate, I think.

For $3300, they could throw in a better case.Image

Thats the nicest Maple that I've seen on an original 381. Those tuners could be replaced and no one would know the difference. I like it. I want it. I can't have it, waaahh.

If you guys keep it up I may just have to take the one hour drive to have a look-see. I may need help with a chant though. No snow, no snow, no snow, no snow.......it has been nasty this week. I've had enough winter for a lifetime.

Is a '70 381 supposed to have high gains?

Hi, Paul. Yes, the high-gains on that 1970 381 are period-correct. Look closer. They're the so-called screw-shaft high-gains.
A Rickenbacker bass is much like the Jaguar E car - perennially ultra-fashionable.

Thanks for enlightening me, Sérgio.
Are the screw-shaft polepieces height-adjustable? Looks like you can turn them with some kind of screw driver or wrench.

The link that I gave at the start of this thread is still active but if you go to Elderly's site and go to used/vintage instruments it is no longer there. Maybe this has been sold. Seems odd.

It doesn't seem odd to me that it sold. It was pretty.

Here are more some pictures of a "screw-shaft" pickup, original to this 360. I thought they were called 'lightshow hi-gains', or 'original hi-gains'...

Note that the shaft is threaded, but there is no adjustment slot on the top.
