The warehouse at 13 Temple Street, Liverpool changed its looks inside over the course of the nearly four years that it was in operation. Actually three separate Clubs had their residency there over this short period, the Iron Door Club surfacing twice!
Many "soon to be famous" Liverpudlians would grace the main floor in the early days of the Club, not the least of which was Ringo Starr and The Fab Four. A number of photos have been found of Ringo, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best at the Iron Door. Some are are shown here along with a brief description of the floor plan of the Club.
The sketch below was kindly created by Geoff Hogarth and shows the main floor of the Storyville Jazz Club in 1961. The "Storyville was in operation from Saturday September 30, 1961 until September 1962. This period would have seen Ringo with Rory Storm and The Hurricanes and then in August 1962 as The Beatles' new drummer. The numbers highlight specific areas of the Club. The area marked 1 was the entrance to the main floor of the Club. 2 and 3 represents the seating area with orange throughout the rooms indicating bench seats and with blue depicting tables. Area 4 was the Ladies' Toilet and 5 was the store room, originally the beer store. Number 6 was the Foyer that housed the reception area including the membership and cash desk. Area 7 was the stairs leading down into the basement dance floor and stage.
Moving into area 8 of the Club one found the Coffee Bar. At this location Coffee, Tea, Milk Shakes, Orange Juice, Pepsi Cola and other Soft Drinks were served. Located behind the coffee bar, and not illustrated here, was a fully equipped kitchen that typically prepared sandwiches. Bacon sandwiches were a very popular item in those days. Area 9 was the main coffee bar. One could get to the dance floor and the the fire escape doors in the basement at number 10.
