Re: The SVT-VR

well, I'll tell you this. I'm 18 years young, bought my '72ish SVT about two years ago for $950 hard earned minimum wage dollars (and it's clean..go figure, right? the guy wanted to help a youngin' out) and haven't done a thing to it yet. I record bands with it frequently now, and I gig it semi ...

Re:

You can safely run a SS amp without a speaker, don't ever do that with a tube amp though.
Could be an oscillation, doubt it though. Tap your tubes lightly with a pencil with the volume up (for preamp tubes), if they ring loudly (ding ding ding) they are microphonic, many new tubes are a little ...

Re: Speaking of V9s...

ugh. threads like this make me hate the fact that I still use all six of my NOS magnavox power tubes in my '71 SVT. I assume it was tubed with them in the 80's..and I know they weren't used for a whole decade.

granted, I might use the amp 30 hours a year, TOPS. mainly just for recording and gigs ...

it appears to be around what Bob Young said. it looks like the earlier blackline lettering on the front, but the slightly darker grill and Ampeg logo attached. that could be as early as a '71 though, by my knowledge, if someone added the Ampeg logo on the front aftermarket. I've seen that happen on ...

I managed to land my vintage 8x10/SVT (it's a '71ish early Blackline, but with the old Blueline-style lettering plate before Magnavox changed to the mid-70's style) for ridiculously cheap in great working order, about $1400. the 8x10 needs a lot of work (and replacement speakers) so I guess that ...

dude, the HLF sucks mids. that cabinet is great for anyone who wants pure bass low end, but not much midrange punch.
I'd advise switching to a standard 8x10 or unported cabinets for more mids.

also, which SVT is this? if it's the classic, be real careful with the bass knob. the EQs on those are ...

I stick to my guns with my '72 SVT.

I've played the old Hiwatt DR203 (Custom 200) next to it as well as a Blueline '69 Linden SVT and a Mesa 400+, and I'd say that I preferred either mine or the Linden SVT of them all from that crop, depending on the sound I was looking for in particular. each ...

go for a vintage Ampeg V-4B. 100 tube watts. SVT preamp, littler box. still weighs about 50 pounds, but you can score them for pretty cheap. there's one on the talkbass forums right now for $450. they're pretty wonderful sounding. I used to run one before I upgraded to a '72 blackline SVT for more ...

things like this make me want to pull the fresh NOS GE power tubes from my '72 Blackline SVT, but they just sound so damn good!
