I have a set of Fender flats (ml's) on a fender precision.....tho i have tried them on a 4003 in the past. They start of really hollow and rather twangy....but after about a week are as thumpy as it gets, but with great upper midrange cut (especially when played with a pick) whilst they are a high t...

i agree john - i use daddario prosteels, and have played the chromes, they are not really that high a tension. Im confused as to why people think the rotosound swingbass strings are high tension - they are floppier than the daddarios i play, or ernie balls etc. the only strings i have tried myself t...

im sure others will have different opinions, but the necks can easily take the tension of a standard set of strings , its just you have to be careful of the old truss rods. In my opinion theres no point using really light strings like TI flats, if it means you cant play the bass in your normal way. ...

GIl, one question - is this a bass you have owned mfor some time? if it currently has a more standard/medium guage set of strings on it, and theres no issues, what is the problem?

this has been talked about to death, but rotosounds are slightly less tension than other stainless roundwounds (ernie ball, daddario) and both the 4001 and 4003 have 2 truss rods

yeh i think the angle/pressure over the bridge saddles can affect sustain, rather than if the entire tailpiece is in contact with the body

Im not worried about the replacement tailpice lifting really, its just an observation. I find it interesting that the new tailpiece never sat flush with the body even when new!

Bending tailpiece - 4 years on

hi all, havent posted in ages! years ago i started a topic on the infamous tailpiece lift, and i replaced my bent up (my about 5mm) tailpiece on my '91 4003 with a new one. Well, heres some interesting observations, the new tailpiece was clearly flat (to the eye) when i recieved it and of a much thi...

HI bob, the new 4003's are horrible i thought, i sold that 2002 burgundy (that i bought over the net) because the neck was so thick it hurt to play. But then, a friend has a 2005 one thats still very thick but not nearly as bad...go figure! also it had major neckdive, a ****** dead E string and even...

I have an ABM EVO II 300 head, bought new recently tho its a discontinued model and about 2yrs old (so definately uk built). its an incredible amp. What i like about Ashdown is that they have character, even the cheaper MAG and EB stuff sounds way fuller and warmer than my old trace elliot, and in m...
