Re: Experiences with Pickguardian?

Although the pickup cover gets in the way, it gets in the way in a nice kind of way. Even after removing it, the gaping hole still kind of gapes in a really cool kind of Grand-Canyon-by-Night way. Even the sharp protruding corner of the surround that catches your fingers has a real retro-pain and ...

Re: Hipshot Drop in Bridge

I can only presume you still had the factory bridge in place.

A ringing endorsement for the Hipshot if ever there was one. With the stock bridge fitted the 'craftmanship' would have been 'dishonor'ed, even ridiculed, as everyone waited for the strings to be loosened, clank-clank saddles removed ...

Re: Hipshot Drop in Bridge

I went into the studio with a G-string intonation issue once that I didn't know about! Horrible! It was my 4003, having had it in my possession for 1 month, and having broken strings I had to switch a new set that threw the action off a bit and I didn't know quite what to do. I hated having to ...

Re: Looking for my first Ric

Yep, you're missing something. Namely, the fact that manual adjustment works for ALL truss rod systems whatever. RIC points this out in their manual. So while pre-85 basses REQUIRED manual adjustment, for post-85 basses it is OPTIONAL. It is also an option that I use for my Jazz Bass. Plenty of ...

Re: Looking for my first Ric

You can either turn the rods clockwise (1/4 turn a day per rod) or do a manual adjustment, which I prefer. To do a good manual adjustment: have a friend hold the bass on a table by tail end, face up on a towel, with the neck hanging over the edge a bit. Press it down firmly but gently, twist each ...

Re: Beatle Eras

Looking at the original poster's timeline, I would lump Let It Be in with the White Album. They were only a matter of months apart and both steered clear of the effects-laden Pepper/MMT studio experimentation. Only Revolution 9 could be considered anything out of the ordinary as everything else was ...

And while I'm at it, from the same magazine, another Ric Pic that I haven't seen elsewhere with the legendary capo in place at the 5th fret:

To keep this thread devoted to pics, I'll start another thread on the subject of the capo....

Re: Rare Photo - McCartney Plays 4001S

This is a great thread. The permanently perceived Beatles/Hofner McCartney association makes it hard to track down photos of the real unsung hero of the 66/67 recording era (the Ric) and makes it all the more satisfying when more come to light.

I came across a 1966 Beatles Monthly Mag 'Christmas ...

Re: Hipshot Does It Again....

So the one firm that has practiced due diligence and continues to do so, gets bad-rapped by its own customers?

And quite right too. If Hipshot started churning out tailpiece assemblies with mute pads, grooved channels, built in tail-lift capability and in-accessible adjustment screws, then ...

Re: Hipshot Does It Again....

I can understand bamboo 'Rockinbetter' copies and the rest, upsetting Rickenbacker, but to throw their toys out of the pram because someone else came up with a better designed lump of metal with a similar footprint to Rickenbacker's shockingly badly designed lump of metal, is nothing short of ...

selling a 4001C64 because you really like your fretless P Bass? That makes absolutely no sense to me. That's like saying, "I just bought this great hammer so I'm going to go sell my chainsaw."

Re: Dawning Realisation...

I will be Rick-less soon and this Rick-driven chapter of my bass-playing existence will be over

That was a very interesting read and I think a very good reason why this thread has stayed where it is. It is first and foremost a discussion about Rickenbackers, albeit possibly falling out of love ...

Re: Dawning Realisation...

Hah! Believe it or not, John Paul Jones claims he never used flatwounds in Zeppelin.

And I've got rounds on my Fender, BUT there's obviously rounds and rounds. The Ric factory rounds rip your fingers to shreds while they're doing their buzz-saw impersonations. The rounds that came with my P ...

Re: Dawning Realisation...

I have no problem playing it on a 4003, and can nail the tone with flatwounds.

Aye, there's the rub (quite literally). You need flats or a Fender for that one. It's playable on a 4003 with rounds, but it's not Zeppelin. For a bit of variety, I use a pick near the bridge and pretend Chris Squire ...
