Re: checker binding years
It's been a while since I've been on the forum. I'm in the process of cleaning out old boxes from our old house that I had In storage. I finally got my workshop built and have a place to put SOME of the stuff. I almost tossed out this entire box, but glad I took some time to go through it. Found the ...

Re: checker binding years
Well, it was a busy weekend going through years of junk in the garage. I had a little time and I can't get an resistance on the coil from the 64, but I didn't have too much time to spend on it. The lead connected to the coil wire was broke off. I tried to solder it back on, but may not have got ...

Re: checker binding years

Not as good as I once thought, but cha' can't win em all. I'll get it restrung and set up. I haven't played it in years and suddenly have the urge to do that!
Don't kid yourself, those are great years for Rick Basses 8)
I agree, but a 1969 would have been ...

And of course this leads to the question, how does one go about doing that?jps wrote:It may also be that the coil is fine but the magnets need to be recharged.randym wrote:I'm guessing that it will need some work. That was the reason I pulled it in the first place. As I recall, it had almost no sound output at all.

Re: checker binding years
check for skunk stripe to narrow it down !!! my MD had a headstock like that.
ok, I'm new to this, please define what the skunk strip is.
The skunk stripe is the strip of walnut/shedua that runs down the center of the bass.
It can be seen most clearly at the headstock. Note that the one on ...

Re: checker binding years
The '64 is amazing. Now find that bobbin! Half the charm of these is the horseshoe pickup with real, magnetized shoes...you'll want to get that working again, just from a value standpoint alone. They happen to sound really nice, too!

Re: checker binding years
So how's the horseshoe pickup on your '64? Still sounding strong?
I think it speaks quietly, at the moment.
Unfortunately, that is all too true. Pulled it out when I was just a dumb kid. Guess now, I'm a dumb adult! :D

Re: checker binding years
ok, here are the pics as promised. First my 64. I bought this in 78 when I was 16. Up until two days ago, I thought it was a 68. Ran the serial and by was I surprised!
Very nice, Randy. Super 4001 you have there. I'm wondering how late in '64 it was made--many of the late '64 Ricks have a darker ...

I did a quick look and I'm sure those were replaced when I installed the EMG's on it.sloop_john_b wrote:Hmmmm. Perhaps a '72 based on headstock shape?
If the pots are original you can date it that way.

Re: checker binding years
It did have the two quarter inch jacks for the output, so that should help date it. I think the logo plate was missing when I got it, so I mae a custom brass place to go with the rest of the scheme.

Re: checker binding years
I stripped it down and a friend of mine did the paintjob. It's not a great job. There are a few runs on it and the paint is cracking. It may be worth while re-refinishing it again.
