mine were crushed like my '68. did not know at the time they were shells...thought it was like the sparkle stuff on drumkits back in the day !!!sloop_john_b wrote:Did MD have crushed pearl inlays or poured?BAD RONBO, KiLLeR DWaRfS wrote:check for skunk stripe to narrow it down !!! my MD had a headstock like that.

The '64 is amazing. Now find that bobbin! Half the charm of these is the horseshoe pickup with real, magnetized shoes...you'll want to get that working again, just from a value standpoint alone. They happen to sound really nice, too!

it's not polite to swear !
Re: checker binding years
Unfortunately, that is all too true. Pulled it out when I was just a dumb kid. Guess now, I'm a dumb adult!jps wrote:I think it speaks quietly, at the moment.sloop_john_b wrote:So how's the horseshoe pickup on your '64? Still sounding strong?
I know it's in the garage at the old house. Just need to find it. It was one of my goals to get it cleaned out this weekend while the weather is so warm. 50's in Indiana during January...amazing!

I may recall an MC with MOP, but not an MD. Anyone?jps wrote:I don't think so, wasn't CP phased out by MC?
I love it when we talk code!
Does this prove the mic has more cool than the scalpel?
Re: checker binding years
I'm guessing that it will need some work. That was the reason I pulled it in the first place. As I recall, it had almost no sound output at all.badeggs wrote:The '64 is amazing. Now find that bobbin! The skunk stripe is the strip of walnut/shedua that runs down the center of the bass.randym wrote:ok, I'm new to this, please define what the skunk strip is.BAD RONBO, KiLLeR DWaRfS wrote:check for skunk stripe to narrow it down !!! my MD had a headstock like that.
It can be seen most clearly at the headstock. Note that the one on the right here has it, and the one on the left doesn't:

BTW, nice basses, but it looks like the built those backwards!
Re: checker binding years
I'm in the process of getting moved. We started Labor Day weekend with everything we need to live, and the garage at the old house is a mess to say the least. I've only been able to work on getting it ready to sell on the weekends and this one is to get the junk out of the garage and hopefully find the bobbin in the process. At least I have incentive to get it cleaned out now!wints wrote:This is what your looking for Randy...

It may also be that the coil is fine but the magnets need to be recharged.randym wrote:I'm guessing that it will need some work. That was the reason I pulled it in the first place. As I recall, it had almost no sound output at all.
Re: checker binding years
And of course this leads to the question, how does one go about doing that?jps wrote:It may also be that the coil is fine but the magnets need to be recharged.randym wrote:I'm guessing that it will need some work.
