Neil, that is a fine example of a mixed metaphor. Yogi Berra is famous for them.

Actually (and I realize I'm splitting hairs here, and I have few of those to spare), Yogi's fame was keyed to his malaprops, not mixed metaphors.

As Yogi said, "You've got to be really careful if you don't know where you're goin', cause you might not get there."

Or: "You can observe a lot just by watchin'"

Sounds like butter belongs to another class of bafflegab: the non-sequitur. People who write these should pay attention to the first quote above!
“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

I used up all my butter jokes on that thread a couple of weeks ago...I keep trying to come up with a 'Last Tango in Paris' line, but it might be too arcane a reference for some of our younger readers...

For some reason, I could never use the phrase 'buttering someone up' after that movie...not with a straight face, anyway...

You aren't splitting hairs, Paul, and I stand corrected. Maybe I was thinking of Yogi The Bear?
