Ebay IDs. Should we know who is who? Your opinion?

Mine is marcdavidsales .I'll probably be changing it soon as I'm not really selling anymore.

As far as hard feelings, I think knowing the ID may be better. If I get outbid by appletree antiques, I'm actually OK with it as I know Chris is a forumite and a friend. If I didn't know it, I might slam him on the boards in digust, then have my tail between my legs when I realize it was him later.

In a recent auction,Brian Crisman had outbid me on an item .He was actually polite enough to ask me about withdrawing his bid if I was going to bid higher so that I don't overpay simply by bidding against him alone. I declined to ask him to do it because I have mixed feelings about manipulating Ebay auctions, even if they're in my favor.

Hmmmm....

I have held back bidding on certain ebay items when seeing a known forumite has already thrown bids in there. Usually, I'm looking to turn the item, so if I KNOW Marc (for instance) is gassing for a Shadow, and I already have one, I'm gonna pass....

...but if it's a late '60s 4001 in excellent condition, or a 4002, items I really WANT for my own playing ... let's ROCK!! LOL!

I MIGHT consider contacting someone I know is interested and let 'em know what my max bid is , so that I don't unnecessarily drive up the price for someone else....

I realize that retracting my bid for Marc's sake would have technically been a "no-no". Simply put....I am not against helping someone I know get a better deal from someone that I do not. If I had known that it was Marc bidding I would not have bid without emailing him to check his interest (if it was FireGlo I would have been much more enthused). I think that bid retraction is an effective tool to use if you suspect (strongly) shill bidding or other seller shinanigans......and I could have slept at night
using it under these circumstances as well.

I just wanted to explain my reasoning for my offer so that there isn't a fear of dealing with me in case a Blackstar, 4004 Cheyenne or 4003s FireGlo become availailable for sale on the Forum.......

I got a nice jetglo 72 4001FL from ebay a few years ago, I've gotten several nice Rics, you just got to know the right questions to ask, and be able to judge a person's charactor through their answers. I've bought a lot of expensive stuff through ebay and never got burned, I ask, ask, ask, if they are honest and really want to help you know what you are getting they will answer all your questions and answer courtiously. I've held back bidding before because of lack of response, and don't care or bad attitudes.

I've been out of this thread awhile, so this is in reply to Bob Young's post about waiting until the last 30 seconds. Programs like E-Snipe are set up to register the snipe bid at the last 1-2 seconds. They actually place the bid at second minus six, and their experience shows them that this is the most successful time (it takes 4-5 seconds to transmit and clear eBay's servers.)

In this case, broadband would not help someone bidding against an E-sniper. Luck might.

As of today, I've sniped about 70 items and only lost two--and that was on purpose, because bids went too high and I bailed. And, yes, I overpaid on a couple, but not by much, and these were really nice items that I don't mind paying an extra $20 or so for.

Paul.....but what if we ALL had the E-snipe program??? I've never really thought about this, in depth....just say you , Marc and I had the E-snipe going on the same item....do you put a maximum amount in or does it just go and go....?

My eBay ID is SAR520 - derived from my other past-time of collecting steam locomotive builders plates and number plates....anyone got any they wanna sell? I've had some luck buying a couple of Rickenbackers at bargain "Buy It Now" prices (including my '65 Export Model 1998FG and my '66 360-12FG)and then selling the occasional guitar to trade-up again and help fund other Rick purchases. My experiences with eBay have been nothing but good so far.

The only people that should have a problem with E-snipe bidding are sellers that are looking to make bids that pad the total.
Any auction I've ever been to, a registered bid has until the gavel drops the 3rd time to place a legitimate bid.
When a snipe bid is placed it has a maximum amount and a time set for bidding.
I don't bid any other way.
I have made some very good buys on Ebay.

Just for the record, I have changed my ID to lendman2000. The reference is that I'm in the mortgage industry, and I statted at my current bank in the year 2000.

Got away from marcdavidsales as I don't plan to do much selling on Ebay in the near future.
