It is mostly in the hands of the player, however one cannot sound like a Tele using a LesPaul and viceversa. However some folks can get the same twang of a Gretsch with a Tele. Some even say a 12 string Dano ($300.00) sounds a lot like a Rick if played right. In any event I hear the Gretsch sound in Seltzer and it is similar to what GH had in the Beatles. Neil Young at one time also used a Gretsch (before he fell in love with blackie).
While we are on the subject of the Buckster, I heard on the news today that Peter Buck was cleared of air-rage charges in a recent court hearing.
