Another case of "the player themselves creates most of their own tone"?

When I think Gretsch, I think Duane Eddy and his 6120.

It is mostly in the hands of the player, however one cannot sound like a Tele using a LesPaul and viceversa. However some folks can get the same twang of a Gretsch with a Tele. Some even say a 12 string Dano ($300.00) sounds a lot like a Rick if played right. In any event I hear the Gretsch sound in Seltzer and it is similar to what GH had in the Beatles. Neil Young at one time also used a Gretsch (before he fell in love with blackie).

Peter Buck has got the Danelectro 12 sounding like a Ric down pretty convincingly.

While we are on the subject of the Buckster, I heard on the news today that Peter Buck was cleared of air-rage charges in a recent court hearing.
Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

That is very correct.

Anyone interested in more info regarding this can check out http://www.murmurs.com - a very fine R.E.M. fan site.

Another thread turning REM! When they played Letterman last and Buck used the Dano 12 on Imitation of Life it sounded great. I wonder if he used it to record with on the album, though. I am SO tempted to buy a 12 string Dano, but it just wouldn't be right for me!

Yes, Peter used the Dano 12 on the album version of "Imitation of Life". I'm not sure about other tracks, but he might have slipped it in on a few other songs as well. He's been seen playing a purple Dano at shows pretty frequently since early last year.

TRAITOR!!! Dano's are cheap and funky looking. Give me a RIC anytime!!! I don't like REM anyway, the only talent is Peter Buck...the rest of the band isn't any better than a local garage band. It's only the RIC that gave them the decent sound. My 2 cents. AL A.
