Flatwounds for a 60's 4001

Post by philipharris »

I'm sure this question has been asked before, so apologies, but I'm looking for a good low tension set of flatties. I've got Pyramids on at the moment but they just don't work for me. The bass is a 65 so I'm primarily concerned about tension on the headstock - there's not a lot of maple behind the nut compared to later production. What's the general view on the right lo-ten string? Thanks folks.
enough, already.

Phil, D'addario flats are great strings. I Have them on my 68 with absolutely no problems.

I second that!

Andrew, the Chromes you are talking about are nickle round wounds.

I have TI Jazz Flats on my Rick right now. They're low tension.

I do use that set on most of my basses Bob, and I have a set of those flats on my 68 to preserve the immaculate frets.

TI's are by far the lowest tension flats I have ever used, much much lower than Pyramids and really play and sound nice. They are a little pricey but worth it IMO.

Too floppy IMHO Bob. They sound nice, but I just couldn't get use to them.

Yeah I like the TI's because previously I'd been using pretty light-gauge roundwounds, and these feel pretty similar, tension-wise.

I've used the Chromes on my Ricks too and they are nice strings. I have them on my Jazz Bass right now, and they work great. I may put them on my C64 when it comes. I'm thinking of putting them back on my V63 too.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

With the TI
s ( I like them a lot) you sometimes need to et the action higher than usual so that they don't buzz as much; but it is ok because they are easier to fret because of the low tension.

I have TI's on a number of different basses. They require a lighter touch but there is an even response from string to string. They last forever so I think of them as being cheaper in the long run.
I put them on my 82 4001 the minute I got the bass home and they have been on since.

LowendBob I also raise my action when I use them, they feel like normal strings then, I don't like light strings either. But they have a great tone and last a long time and are nice for bending if you're into that as I am.

" since 82? "

Actually I just got her a couple of months ago after wanting a Ric forever. .... and it is an 80 4001 rather than an 82. I did the cap bypass and put on TI flats and am getting the sounds that I was hoping for. The Ric has been getting a lot of use. Me likey a lot.

I have been surprised at the attention that the bass has been getting.
