Bob, the Mesa Bass 400's are 300 watts, and have a simmilar setup to the SVT's(6x6550), but you can also use 6l6's in them(that is what the later ones came with), unlike the 400+, which can only use 6l6's.
They have the same posted wattage(ignore Mesa's 500w rating, that is peak output), but many people say the 400 is more powerful, and not as mushy as the 400+(due to the 6550's), and the serviceman at Mesa told me this!
That is pretty cool of him, considering they don't even carry 6550's anymore!
"Nah, don't buy our tubes, put 6550's in that thing man!"
Kudos to him.

There is a newcomer on the scene for bass amps, guitar amps, and custom amps in general. I met him about a month ago and haven't heard his amps yet, but have seen a couple and they look really nice! This person is Conrad Sundholm, one of the founders of Sunn amps back in the 60's. He is making his own line of amps now and you can check them out at www.conradamps.com.

I made the mistake of stopping by the local Guitar Center last night and plugged into an Ampeg SVT and 410HLF cab. I was impressed! Then I plugged in the SVT-3 Pro and it seemed so lifeless to me in comparison. Temptation was growing, but I didn't buy the head because I don't like the idea of an 85 lb. head and I'm selling my 410HLF cabinet in favor of my Aguilar GS112s.
A friend suggested Thunderfunk bass heads. I'm looking into a one, but I'm going to look at a few other options this Saturday when I have to run my SVT-3 into the shop.

If you think all is going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
