This 4001 S looks to need some serious TLC...

That is a "set neck" bass. Probably a model 4000 with the neck pickup added. Could have structural problems.

Technically, a 4001s IS a 4000 with a neck pickup added, albeit by the factory instead of by some guy with power tools and a soldering iron.

The TRC says MODEL 4001. Of course, it could be a replacement part.

Weren't there set neck 4001's made in the late 70's? That is mentioned in the history of Rickenbacker bass models on this site.

1974 - Gap in center raised lip of bridge eliminated
(mid 70's) - Set neck design replaces neck thru design
1974 - Neck pickup was moved 1/2 inch closer toward the bridge pickup

Sorry, but a small correction is in order:
1973 - gap in center etc.;
1975 - neck p.u. moved etc..

Mr Silva is correct no gap after 73 and all 74s had 1/2 inch spacing.
