Ric-O-Weight
I was playing a new 330 in a store the other day and noticed that it felt like it weighed less than my 1966 335. When I got home, I picked up my guitar and felt that it did seem heavier than the 330 in the store. I've never played any other 330 model before, so never had a chance to notice. Any big differences here? Reasons? Or is this just my imagination!?
It may depend on what type of internal bracing the guitar has...I have noticed on some Rickenbackers from 1966 to about 1969 that there is a little bit more than just X-bracing.
My theory on this is that many Ricks from that era were made with reinforced bracing to accomodate the converter-comb mechanism, if the factory decided to add this feature during assembly. This should be visible through the soundhole---visualize where the large chrome screw to hold the comb handle in place would be attatched to the top(just up and forward of the bridge p/up).....some Ricks in the mid-late '60's have this and some don't. My 1967 330/12 is heavier than others I have played(it has the added wood bracing), and my '68 370/12 has it as well. My 360/12CW is super-light compared to these older Ricks I have, but the bracing in the new guitars has changed a little, I think..
Don Adamek and I have talked of this before concerning our '68 12-strings---he no longer owns his, but it was 3 sn#'s away from mine, and was retrofitted with a Byrd wiring setup in Nov.1970 by Rickenbacker at the plant. Don's 360-370/12 had the added wood bracing.
