The easiest way to tell if a bass is set-neck looking at it from the front is if you can see the skunk stripe on the headstock, but not on the front of the body in the spaces between the pickguard, treble pickup, and bridge. If you flip a 4001S set-neck around, you'll see the skunk stripe going from the headstock all the way down until the neck ends and the body begins (unless you have a solid finish).

Also, "S" actually stands for "Sell one to me for peanuts".

Oh, because of that picture, I can't resist. Here is a site that EVERYONE in the UNIVERSE must see, or you will not know the true depths of semi-juvenile humor:

The S is for special order meaning a 4000 model with the neck pickup,It does not have to do with binding, otherwise a 4000 would be a 4000s which it isn't.The s at least on the sixty's basses signifies the addition of the neck pickup to the 4000 model which makes it a special order.

And I thought that us Ric-heads got up our own backsides from time to time, this is just the first posting that I found on the link that Robert gave us....

I think they are on another planet, Krypton I guess...
