The easiest way to tell if a bass is set-neck looking at it from the front is if you can see the skunk stripe on the headstock, but not on the front of the body in the spaces between the pickguard, treble pickup, and bridge. If you flip a 4001S set-neck around, you'll see the skunk stripe going from the headstock all the way down until the neck ends and the body begins (unless you have a solid finish).
Also, "S" actually stands for "Sell one to me for peanuts".
