That's it! My 22 was a random number it generated to make the average more, uh, "average"!

Oh, but another reason is that they didn't use any Beatles songs - I would've nailed that stuff easily.

Roy, i think everybody got it was a theory, and i suggest the guys were joking! But the thing is, we can check it! I may record the fragments on my PC in .wav format, then analyze the waves (as i did when i was a student), so it would be clear which pieces presented are the same and which are different, then, with all information, pass the test again and see the results. Could be the trick here, i mean the pairs presented in two different "drop-in"'s may not be the same; like, when you check it at 5 pm, you get pair #2 of the same tunes, and when you drop in again like at 5:30 pm the pair #2 consists of two slightly different tunes... i, for instance, cannot memorize 30 pairs of tunes note by note! I had three different results at three drop-ins: 26, 24 and then "reversed" 25 (5/30).
The question is, is this investigation really needed... and when will i have enough spare time to try it...

Don't feel bad Steve I came home exhausted from work the other night, banged it out as fast as I could and got a 22 also. I'm going to take it again tomorrow when I'm not tired. I don't expect to get a 30 though, some of those lines are pretty hard, also I think it may test our musical memory more than anything else. I noticed one thing the notes themselves were out of tune, they were not pure tones, were a little disonant. Some lines were obviously different but others were more subtle.

26 out of 30. I think that's where I should be, since I learned to play by ear. Can't read a lick of music, unless tab counts.

I think Bob has hit upon something in that it tests musical memory more than anything else. I have a tin ear to be honest. I rely on a tuner to make sure I am even in tune. I do get ribbed time to time from my band mates because I really can't hear whether I'm out of tune or not. However, I do have a decent memory - lot of useless trivia junk floating around.

OK I just retook it with a decent amount of sleep and waited a little bit between lines and got a 28. I think the lines that make musical sense are much easier than the other ones which are just a rapid bunch of notes (at least to me), or maybe that's my musical unsophistication. Also the ones with "bad" notes are very easy to pick out at least for me, major to minor etc. the lines that are just a little bit different and have many note rapid notes were the hardest ones for me.

So, as i suggested, it has little to do with age, but perhaps it still has something to do with the instrument you play.

And i 100% agree with your suggestion that it tests musical memory rather than ear. I had a feeling in some cases the difference between two tunes was the length of pauses, not the notes, so it also may test the sense of rhythm...
