Before a Leslie cabinet was chosen for the vocal on Tomorrow Never Knows, Lennon's original vocal idea for this song was for him to be suspended by a rope in the center of the studio and then swung around in a cirlcle singing while passing by strategically placed microphones.

George Martin shot that idea down. LOL!

I have heard that a British-made WEM Electronics "pep" distortion pedal (probably with a germanium transistor) was used for the fuzz, then straight to the board. I don't remember where I got that info.
A fuzzface set for unity gain might get close, especially with a Fairchild limiter/compressor.

Thinking of the Tomorrow Never Knows on a rope idea, can you imagine the crazy, first impression ideas that must've been thrown out in early studios? Especially by guys like the Beatles who were always up for getting a new sound. Mr. Carey, you must have some ideas on this?

Thanks Bill, here is Lennon making the adjustment to the WEM Rush Pep Box. The Casino is a hint as well.

Peter: Very interesting picture. Don't you think the guitar looks more like his orange Gretsch rather than the Casino? The cut-away and the lighter color of the guitar makes me think this may be the Gretsch. I believe the Casino would have had much darker back and sides as well as a deeper cut-away. Is it possible this shot came from the 'Paperback Writer' session?

Peter, I'm with Randy on this one! Looks like the Gretsch Nashville. Most likely the 'Paperback Writer' session that had Lennon on the Nashville, Macca on the Casino, and Harrison playing the Burns Nu-Sonic bass would be my guess.

I have seen another pic from the "Paperback Writer" session (Beatles Gear) where John had a glass of wine sitting on top of his Vox amp - and the bottom of it can just barely be seen here!
