I like these because they have a lot of surface area NOT covered up with a plastic pickguard/routing cavity cover, which means they have lots of surface area for wood finish.

I've stated in the past that I like finishes that show the wood on an instrument but in this case I really like the Jetglo and the BlueBoy finishes best. Maybe that's because the FireGlo has too much yellow in the center on these for my taste.

Hmmm...
Listen to that sustain!

Notice that the slash soundhole on the Blue boy 4005 is smaller than the rest. This 4005 is the earliest that I've seen by a few months. Maybe they hadn't quite "dialed" everything in yet. (was trying to stay away from the word "prototype", hee hee).

Quote.."I thought there was no binding used on the soundhole for 4005 models from '65-'66. The ones I've seen so far don't seem to have it.
Can anyone clarify this?"
My April, 1966 has the bound soundhole...FD ####

David,

Is your 4005 a OS(WB) model or a carved top?

Francesco,

That is a beautiful finish. Hope my turns out that way.

It seems that, in the '60s at least, the standard 4005 had binding around the slash hole with checker binding on the back, whereas the 'deluxe' WB models Image with the binding on both front and back did not have the binding around the slash hole. This is only from examples I have seen, the above featured six!! I could be wrong about certain specific pieces out there.

John, the missing hole in the PG and the 4001 in the body cavity always made me wonder the same thing.... Glad you did 'er justice.

Just curious,

Has anyone here played the '65 4005 BB? If so, how does it compare to a stock 4005? Sound wise and quality wise.

I played it briefly at MARF, but it was not plugged in to an amp. It is just like a stock 4005 except for the finish, excellent as all 4005s are! Image

Thank you gents for such treats. Would love to play one, hope one will make it to the NEC UK Conf! I am hoping to make it to that!
Tell me does it feel the same when you've set upon a change but your heart's in the old times?
