Need a Small Amp for my 330 12

Post by junglejem »

While I await the arrival of my 330 12, I'm looking at amp options. I have a Jangle Box on its way, and I already use a D-TAR Solstice blender/preamp on my acoustics, so one choice is to go with no amp at all. The Church at which I play has a wonderful Aviom monitor system where each musician has his own monitor mix thru either a floor wedge or in-ears.

But I'm still leaning toward an amp.

I'm looking at SMALL and INEXPENSIVE if I decide to go with a stage monitor. Maybe Vox Pathfinder, VR-15, Brian May, possibly Fender Frontman 25, Roland Cube 30, etc.

Any pearls of wisdom with respect to small amps in conjunction with a Jangle Box?

The Tech 21 Trademark 10 or 30 might work well for you.

I've used my Roland Cube 30 with my Jangle box, Jere and it's a good combination. I find the Cube 30 a good little amp and very portable. The inbuilt effects are reasonably good also.

I'm sure others will have lots of recommendations but that's my 2 cents worth. Image

One of the smaller Roland JC models will suit your needs. The Vox Brian May is a one-trick pony which will NOT do your 12-string justice.

In the last two years, I've been using small amplifiers exclusively -you can dial in your tone and save your hearing! If you want to spend the shekels, a Traynor YCV20 is a great inexpensive Class A valve amp which is voiced Ric-friendly.

Best of luck,

Still a big fan of my Vox Valvetronix AD30VT. 11 amp models (including Fender Twin and Vox AC30) and 11 effects. Great for recording and home use and can hold its' own in a small combo. Price is right, about $240 street.

Jere, I have the Vox VR-30 and I think it's great! One basic sound with OD available. Sounds great with my 360/12's. I imagine the VR-15 is a good one also. Very reasonable @North Coast. I had an AD30VT for 3 weeks and hated it - sent it back. Way too complicated and a lot of useless stuff IMHO...

Pathfinder, Roland Cube, just steer clear of a Tech 21 unless you like amps with little versatility.

Why do you say that, Stan? My Trademark 10 was maybe not very powerful, but 'little versatility' was the last thing I would associate with it - at least from a sound point of view.

How about a Little Lanilei 3350LT(high Gain) or Super 50(more clean headroom).Great little tube practice amps which can also be used to drive 2 4x12 cabs:

David, glad your Tech 21 provides the sound you desire. I just found my Tech 21 30 watt limited, at least to me. In addition the electronics and controls began failing after a couple of years, and I got it new. I've never had this problem with any other amp I've ever owned. Could be I just got a lemon, but once bitten...

The Fender 25R is also a great little amp for $139. Clean and powerful Fender sound. Does not sound like a little practice amp.

Welcome to the forum Jere. If you want a small amp, I would recomend a Marshall 100w valve head, but just the one 4x12. If you want a big amp, then just add another 4x12 Image.
'Rickenbacker'...what a name! After all these years, it still thrills me.

Is anyone familiar with the Orange Crush 15R and/or 30R amps? Reviews look good, Orange reputation is good to my knowledge, price is amazing; but you don't find these in stores, at least in my area.
