Wow,

Look what a dead man started...LOL!

I read a little about Entwistle in this thread, but learned a few "other" things, haha....and I never knew he played like that....just awesome..

Someone said in this thread that McCartney was Chris Squire's main influence, but I have an inteview in Bass Guitar in which he states that it was Entwistle..

Highlighted in the article:

"I used the Rickenbacker bass because of the WHO's John Entwistle. A lot of my influence comes from him."

From the Fish' mouth..

I was listening to a cd of the John Entwistle band "Left for Live" ... the bass tone pretty much sucks ... on that CD Entwistle becomes the poster boy for too many effects on a bass ...

Although I much prefer his Alembic tone to any other tone he used, I still prefer his Status tone to his P Bass or T Bird tone. They're ok, but a bit too clunky for me personally. Although the Status sounds very different depending on the recording; I'm not a huge fan of the sound on the Vegas Job dvd, but I love it on the Albert Hall dvd. Live I couldn't hear him at all so I couldn't tell!

I'm not up on the Ox's bass history. Did he go from the "Fenderbird" straight to the Alembic?

I prefer his live sound to anything he did in the studio. With Live at Leeds at the top of that list.

Yep, around 1975. Here's a detailed history of John's gear:

I like his tone on "So Sad About Us" best. First time I heard it I loved it.

Had the singing and playing not been so off key, this may have made it into the Kids are Alright.

that clip is a classic example of how Entwistle carried the Who through a song ... and yes that is a great bass tone ... kind of similar to Live at Leeds ...

Yeah, he's said in interviews that he built Frankenstein (the Leeds Precision Bass) with the pickups and pots from one of his plank Precisions. The pickups according to the Ox were real hot. Great tone.

P basses are great sounding basses, especially for recording.

You CANNOT beat that P-sound... I love it.
