Wow,
Look what a dead man started...LOL!
I read a little about Entwistle in this thread, but learned a few "other" things, haha....and I never knew he played like that....just awesome..
Someone said in this thread that McCartney was Chris Squire's main influence, but I have an inteview in Bass Guitar in which he states that it was Entwistle..
Highlighted in the article:
"I used the Rickenbacker bass because of the WHO's John Entwistle. A lot of my influence comes from him."
From the Fish' mouth..

Although I much prefer his Alembic tone to any other tone he used, I still prefer his Status tone to his P Bass or T Bird tone. They're ok, but a bit too clunky for me personally. Although the Status sounds very different depending on the recording; I'm not a huge fan of the sound on the Vegas Job dvd, but I love it on the Albert Hall dvd. Live I couldn't hear him at all so I couldn't tell!

"I'm not up on the Ox's bass history. Did he go from the "Fenderbird" straight to the Alembic?"
Yep, around 1975. Here's a detailed history of John's gear:
