I think people who say that are comparing them to 4001's with the cap in which used to be the only game in town here for Ric basses for many years. Bad reps die hard.

Actually, there is something to those claims about the sound. My Blackstar is significantly hotter than most of my other Ricks. Brian Crisman noticed that too when he played it at the Columbus confluence. I have never measured the coil resistance but perhaps the Blackstars got a few extra windings? In any event, that is a great looking Blackstar and I hope Dave nails it down. Something tells me that he will!
