OK already, folks! Here is what I can announce for now about this year's Southern California Confluence.
There will be a SoCalCon the last weekend in August, the 26th and 27th (there may be something also on Friday the 25th). Details such as the venue and schedule are still pending. Be assured that details will be forthcoming when I have them!
Jason, depending on just where in L.A. your friend lives, you'd be about a 1-2 hour's drive away.

Well, a day late, but I hope not a dollar short!
Here is what is known so far, directly from JH (with his permission, of course - thanks, John!):
I'll post some additional hotel information shortly, just in case.

For those who were at last year's SoCalCon or are familiar with Orange County, here is a map of the area:Hi Gary:
The hotel is confirmed:
http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/index.jhtml?ctyhocn=SNAFMDT
We have room 1 (California Ballroom) booked, which has an extraordinary view over the lake and swimming pool. The lounge area is to the immediate right on the chart, which will be available to us, as well as the deck/terrace area:
http://www.doubletree.com/en/dt/hotels/floorplans.jhtml?ctyhocn=SNAFMDT
As you can see, it's 33'x56'x9' with a capacity for 180. We're envisioning areas set up to display on three sides.
Rooms rates are Thursday, Friday & Saturday: $89.00+tax (single bedded rooms) $99.00+ tax (2 bedded rooms). It's one of the few hotels in the
area to feature newly remodeled guest rooms and suites. All rooms have high speed internet.
Reservations must be made by August 10th to receive special group rate. The group code will be posted shortly on our website and there's no shortage of rooms available. There's some suites too.
They have a full free shuttle service to and from the airport, as well as So. Coast Plaza and presumably other restaurant destinations.
The "confluence portion" will be all day Friday and Saturday up to 4:30 PM. We expect to have some kind of informal party on Friday evening and we're good with the hotel until midnight.
Factory tours will be held morning and early afternoon on Friday. It's a short, pleasant walk from the hotel to the factory.
This is all free.
The "big event" will be Saturday evening, with shuttle buses going to the venue which is about 45 minutes away. Attendees may prefer to book that evening at one of the three 5 star hotels next to the venue on Saturday night. This event will accommodate 500 to 1000 persons, and there will be a charge which is actually a donation to a worthy institution. This will become clear as we announce it.
There are no official plans for Sunday and everything must be out of the ballroom by 4:30 on Saturday.
I have no problem if you want to post any of this, although I should have the "group code" in a day or two. We'll be posting about "the big
event" later as some things are finalized.
Cheers,
