Thanks for the offers of lifts from the airport (if I can get there). I just hope that I don't end up sharing a room with Graham, he is so boring, all he wants to do is talk about guitars, go drinking and eye up pretty ladies all the time! Image

"...talk about guitars, go drinking and eye up pretty ladies..."

Isn't that what the weekend is supposed to be?

Are you going straight thru, Brian? I hate flying like you would not believe, but I can't drive that one from Detroit.

Steve,

My wife is actually rethinking going (long story.......basically she is great and any issue created is my doing :-). It's 34 hours according to Mapquest but I think I can shave a little off of that Image. My plan is to leave early Wednesday August 23rd and arrive late Thursday the 24th in Santa Ana.....I have my room booked for the 24th-26th and leave early Sunday morning the 27th getting home late on Monday the 28th. I plan on driving as long as safely possible the first day (at least 18 hours) with a stop at a random safe looking hotel and wrapping it up with a more leisurely cruise the next day. My only other planned stops are for gas. If the Hoover Dam or some other cool place is very close to the route (I haven't looked into it much yet) I may (MAY) have a slight detour but nothing that would deter from the two day trek......I like being at home and I'm sure I'll miss my wife and puppies by then.

Anyway, if you need a lift let me know. I'd rather not detour to Detroit since I have a long enough trip but if you want to copilot we could probably work something out....my wife would be thrilled since one issue she has is me driving alone (for whatever reason she worries about me in case something happens.....like I can't take care of myself). There will be a cooler of Red Bull, orange juice and some sammiches, Howard Stern will be on Sirius then it's Hair Nation and Hard Attack the rest of the way. Plus there is plenty of room for Rics in the back........

I once drove from St.Cloud MN to Barstow CA in 3 days. It wasn't fun at all. To all who are driving a significant distance, (IMHO) it's worth the extra $$ to fly and be well rested. Be safe on your journey.

I love driving and routinely do the 12 hour jaunt to Myrtle Beach and arrive well rested and ready to swim. There's nothing I need to see that requires that I fly.....no bridge, no boat, not worth it! Image

Brian - I used to drive Kalamazoo, MI to Tempe, Az in 40 driving hours - no quicker and not necessarily observing all speed limits.... I think 34 hours is understated.

Another comment, and I mean no disrespect, but you are in more and constant mortal danger driving there than you would be flying. The odds are higher of an accident on the highway....

It is just about all highway and if Mapquest has the miles right 2340 miles at a conservative 65 MPH is 36 hours. It may be closer to 40 hours.....I don't know since I haven't driven it yet.....but either way it's a two day jaunt or possibly two days with a few hours on the 3rd day which still gets me in Friday morning.

I know all of the statistics (and have seen my share of driving fatalities) but I also constantly watch the Discovery channel and have seen plenty of airline crashes so I'll take my chances staying on the ground. If I get in a car accident I "may" die....if my plane crashes there is no "may" about it. I realize flying is safer but that still doesn't get me on a plane.....I'll take driving any day.

Seriously, flying is not an option I will even consider. Thanks for your concern though!

Brian, have you ever been on a plane?

My wife has a brother who will never get on an airplane...and he used to be an airplane builder at McDonnell-Douglas.
