I thought it had everything to do with vinyl.
The Dream Police thing I never heard, though I had the album. Funny that album contains the completely unsubliminal Gonna Raise Hell.
I do remember the backwards masking guy on the Tonight Show and thought he was hysterical, as were most of the bands that gave his short career a start.

I think CT's big mistake was trying to get heavy when AC/DC and all that stuff suddenly was getting airplay like it was finely crafted pop.
Surrender branded them bubblegum and it's quite unfortunate because they had a lot more potential that was squandered after their third album.

Surrender was my favorite CT cut. I joined them at the point of their third album, so it was my initial point of reference. That album rocks, as far as I'm concerned.
They are very smart, market-wise. They saw Japan getting big, and--pop they went!

“I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did.”

I can't help it...I love a lot of the early CT stuff, even the stuff before they got recorded, you wouldn't even think it was the same band! Some dark, weird stuff....love it! I love it all, who am I kidding...one of my all-time fave bands.
I actually have a tape somewhere of Russ Gibb's radio show from the early 70's where he goes thru that backward "Paul is dead" stuff for 90 minutes. Classic stuff.

Rick Neilsen....200 guitars, one tone!
I like CT but Rick makes me appreciate the Beatles using Vox and Fender amps.
You can actually hear whether Lennon is playing a 325 or a Casino.
Taking this thread back to vinyl, I noticed yesterday that there are some turntables in the window of my local Urban Outfitters store, which also sells LP frames.
Vinyl is getting hip again.
