I owned a mid 50's ES125 cutaway back in the mid 80's that had one single P90 smack dab in the middle. I thought hard back then about adding two more vintage P90's at the bridge and neck and making a poor boy ES-5 Switchmaster but traded it even for a Rickenbacker 4003 bass. With the single P90 that guitar had tone for days. Instant Chuck Berry!

"... that had one single P90 smack dab in the middle"

Is it possible that you actually had an ES-225T?
