Sold all my RICs, bar one...

Post by bob_atherton »

I have in the past two months sold all my RIC basses except for one, my totally drop dead gorgeous, plays like a dream ‘72 4001.

In total I have sold six basses made in ‘76’, ‘78, ‘80, ‘84,‘86 and ‘89. The reason being the new neck.

I get a certain amount of pleasure from the slightly older basses, and I really like a few battle scars, but when all is said and done it’s a bass that has to play well, be reliable, feel, sound and look good. I believe the new 4003’s will fit the bill for me.

The day after the new neck was announced I ordered a 4003 AFG with toaster. I don’t like the look of the more recent FG’s and was thrilled that the COY has a real vintage mellowing to it. This I hope will be my main player. I love my ‘72, but can’t get away with any strings but TI’s. These feel and sound pretty good but at times I want a heavy duty sound and string on a bass. I have also been lucky enough to get an order confirmed for the anniversary bass. As no two basses are ever completely alike I will have fun working out the merits of each.

I hope I have done the right thing as one or two of the ones I sold I was very attached to, time will tell…

Any other bass I get after these will probably be for a bit of fun. I still hanker after a 4005.

So that's why the Azureglo was on eBay... good thing you kept the '72, those are hard to replace if you have seller remorse.

Ahhhh, a Ricken-blood-letting. I could use to go through a similar procedure.

Nahhhhhhhh!

Modern truss rods are a good thing. But so are sparkly inlays.

Hope the new Ricks work out for you.

Bob, Are you aware of whether the new arrivals will come with the new pups with adjustable pole pieces ?

Jeff, who says you can't have both?

I would imagine those new adjustable pole pieces will solve the problem some people seem to have had with a weak-sounding E string.

Or, they could just buy a decent amp Image

Good question Keith, don't know. I like the idea of the adgustable poles as on nearly all the RICs I sold one string or another was a bit weak, often the 'A' for me, but as I use a decent amp my Ashdown never lets me down on the 'E'. ;-)

Bob,

I'll trade you a V63 with a great neck and strong truss rods for that nasty old '72!Image

Hell, I'd probably trade you two!;)

Kevin...

If you'd trade 2 for a '72, I bet you'd do one for a '77. Great! I'll box it up for you... Image
What do you mean the Bass is too loud???

Damn! You're worse than my wife! At least when I ask her ridiculous questions, she usually throws a shoe at me! Image

Hmmm...my dealer called the factory back in June and he was told that the AFG 4003's didn't have a factory-installed toaster pickup option.
