He(McGuinn)got the guitar you refer to(a 64 360/12) back from Rickenbacker in Feb. 1966 with the added middle pickup and the custom wiring. He took delivery of a 2nd 12-string in June '66, this one was a 3-pickup 12-string from the start...and others too, later on...

John, all of The Byrd's really well-known hits were made while Roger's first Rickenbacker was still a 360/12.....all of his compression was outboard gear, nothing like that existed in the guitars until the LE guitars came out in the late 80's. Roger installed the Vox Treble Boost on his 2nd guitar after he picked it up from Rickenbacker in June '66.
