A friend here at work just lent me a Chris Brubeck CD when he noticed the RIC poster in my cube. Chris, son of Dave Brubeck, plays a MG fretless 4001. My friend, who met him, says he thinks her remember Chris telling him it is a '68.

Yes - Chris Brubeck, one of the relatively unsung Rick heroes. And fretless at that! I'm surprised this guy doesn't get more attention here. I partially share the blame, since I know better!

BTW, I met & interviewed his pop back in the late nineties (the J Dog radio days). Very nice guy. Class act.

'68? I don't believe it is. Check out the center stripe. Maybe a '78. :-)

'68 probably right. Its an early one. And indeed check that center stripe, notice how wide it is? I've seen other pics and its definatley a one off. It also has walnut wings.

It used to have walnut wings anyway. It looks as if it has went through a few changes since the last time I saw it. Chris is a long time Rickenbacker user. Maybe John Hall can elaborate.

This may be a different bass though, as you cant see the "stripe" just below the pickguard.

It's a late 68 or more possibly a 69, as it has a bound headstock. There's another bass here that has one too, that was quite probably it's twin.

I believe Sergio has pictures...

That's a pretty cool letter that Chris sent in, did anyone notice a jazz bass pup in the bridge position?
Dave Meros ought to send in a write up on his ricks past and present, I think his current jetglo one has four j-bass pups.

Hi there. Just got home. Well, I don't have any pics of Chris Brubeck's actual non-one-off '69 (?) fretless 4001, but I do have pics (I hope they're not too large to post in here - must check first) of "on and off" forumite James Grove's "fretted" fretless 4001 which is identical to Brubeck's. Stay in tune while I look for the photos. Cheers.

P.S. New Heavenly Blue's 1972 release is a masterpiece. Give it a try if you can.

Okay, here are some pics of James Grove's heavily modded, "fretted" fretless 4001. You will notice the very lame fret job, but that's not
important now. Also notice that it is a "21 fretter". TRC not period accurate.
Chris Brubeck's 4001 is exactly like this one.
