Off track a bit, but to all you Chromes users... how long have you been keeping them on? Mine are at 13 months and still going strong... Image
What do you mean the Bass is too loud???

I've had them on my V63 for about a year now and they still sound fine. Guage 45-100.
I recently went back to playing a Rickenbacker bass. Its like meeting an old friend again

Dirt and contaminants don't get into flatwound strings as easily as roundwound strings, so flats usually last longer than rounds.

I plan to get some flatwounds soon for my 72 4001. But now I look around and see a lot of confusing choices regarding length---extra long, 3/4, etc---what length would I select for my Ric?

As a side note, when I got my '76 4000 in 1986, it still had the original flats on it.
They still sounded good, but were starting to unwind: the edges of the flat outer winding was starting to lift.

I also never liked rounds until I got the Rick.
I'd like to try flats on it again, but I think I was the last one to buy them here in town, so there aren't any to be had locally!

Longs are what you want for your '72 4001, Mark.

I'm mainly a flatwound player but have a 4001 with Ric roundwounds on it, they are at least 3-4 years old and still sound bright. I haven't bought a set of strings for at least two or three years, flats will last years and years.

I have always used Rotosound 66 on my 4003 and never tought of switching. They are really confortable, light and the sound is... well you all know...

BUT! I recently switched to D'addario chromes (45-100). Took about a week to get used to it, but now it just feels right.

I'll need to buy an other 4003, so I could use it with rotosounds and have best of both worlds.
Yes, I played one... and I know!
