4003 push/pull feature

Post by eddied »

I giged with my new 4003AFG last night and must say that the push/pull...vintage/modern feature for live playing is deceptive. At home experimenting alone with tones, it does sound distinct, but for live louder applications, the modern, higher output setting is the most desired. Playing live doesn't really distinguish this feature. Anyone else have this opinion? For looks and feel, the AFG is SOOOOOOOOO vintage looking and the fireglo is aged. It is really spectacular with the headstock wings, and yellowed binding. I will put vintage knobs on and have changed the neck pu to a toaster, it looks like an early 70's 4001...... Very nice indeed!
Rick bass fanatic. I own and play several professionally. I have a passion for the S models.

yep ... in a modern situation with modern amps the old .0047 capacitor is obsolete ... but some people love the sound ...

So you guys are of the opinion that the new vintage tone circuit is not so great eh? Just wondering since I missed it by a year...my 4003's an '05.

I have an '05 as well but I just installed the push/pull kit myself.

How hard is it to install the push/pull kit by yourself? What does it take? Thanks.

I've noticed that on my '06. It's hard, really hard to tell a difference when playing live.....but at home or at rehearsals, you can definitely tell a difference.

If you can use a screwdriver, nut driver or wrench, and a soldering iron easy. One of the RIC dealers sells a kit of the parts needed, but I forget who.

I'm in the Rath camp here. The push/pull pot is a cool feature, but will always be left pushed in for me.

The capped tone just doesn't do much for these ears.

I have to agree with the Jeffs. The cap takes away fundamental. Playing live requires the bottom be heard and felt. Maybe the cap would be more useful in the studio.

You can buy the push pull kit from that site. It's only $15.
