The cream 4000 was a Marc Seligman special to make it look like a 4001CS.

Same scale, Joe. The necks are a little thinner because they have no binding. They were all neck-through until around 1972 when they went to set necks.

I have a re-issue horseshoe in mine and it is every bit as loud as my 4003. The tonal range may be somewhat limited compared to a 4001 or 4003, but I don't feel that I'm missing anything. I get plenty of bottom out of it.

This may be sacriledge, but I'm considering bumping her up to a 4001S. The routing is there, and I've got most of the parts, including a 4001 TRC. I'll keep all the original parts though to convert back in the future.

It's your bass. I would leave the 4000 electronics intact, but with totally dual filled guards, it would be a quick solder job to switch between a 4000 and a 4001s.

My '68 seemed to have low output when it was new. It did have a horseshoe pickup. I couldn't tell you if the 4000s came with the bass cut cap back then. Here is another pic. This one really shows the different fretboard wood coloring.

According to the RIC schematic, the 4000 did not use the series cap. Used the 250k volume and 500k tone pots.
