So I finished the bass...

Post by coreyk »

Some may remember me telling about a custom finish project for a customer in Texas. To make a long story short, it's a possible answer to the question of "What if The Fool did a bass for McCartney?" I worked up a few drawings based on personal details of this client's life story and once he agreed on a design, I set out to work... the finish is intentionally textural, done in oil colors and finished with a shellac barrier and 9 light coats of nitro lacquer so it can be touched up, if necessary. The neck has 10 hand-rubbed coats of Tru-oil gunstock finish.

The bass is an '82 transition 4003 bought on Talkbass as a basket case. It had new-made trussrods and a fair bit of original parts.
The neck pickup is a 70s Hi-gain; the bridge pickup is what it looks like, made by who you think it was (years ago, before he stopped for good). The circuit is the typical mono type with an .047 tone cap for each pickup. There is no third cap for the bridge pickup.

Some of you who spend time on other bass forums will know the owner as "Lord Bongo"...he's actually a friend of Sterling Ball, and a very vocal devotee of the modern EBMM basses, but *had* to have a Rickenbacker for those Beatle tunes. He's going to have great fun with this one.

Higher-res versions can be seen here:

Wow. Amazing. That's one of the best looking basses I've seen. I sooooo want one like that!

FWIW, I like this one more than guitars done by The Fool.

great work... how do you figure out which to put on the front and which to be located on the back?

Very nice work. Didn't think I'd ever like a Ric with that type of custom finish, but here I am, thinking about doing something like that to my old '77.
