Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
The photo of Glover I remember seeing somewhere was Roger standing with a big pile of equipment, and the two Rick basses in the background, one Jetglo, the other reddish. Both had the slanted Jazz pickups. Anybody have a link to that photo?

I suppose that is true. But listen to the track. It just does not sound like a jazz bass. Does anybody know what else besides a jazz Larry played back then?

Doesn't anyone want Jerry Only's 4001? I'd give him 20 bucks for it!

It doesn't sound like a jazz bass to me either. Other than the 4005, I've only seen Graham with J basses (not always F*nd*er).rickfan60 wrote:bassduke49 wrote:Ted, it hasn't been established that Graham used that bass on the recording, but I hope he did. Someday I'll find out.

You guys may be better diagnosing tonal differences, but there are so many other variables that could be in play. It would be a great tidbit for the book, but I don't want to play it up and then find out that it was recorded with something else. I'd like to get confirmation from Larry Graham. Does anyone know how to get in touch with him?

I would want Pete Quaife's (Kinks) 4001.
Leprosy is rare & scarce but nobody wants that!

What about John Entwistle's 1999RM? I'm sure it's somewhere, god knows where, though...

I'd take anyone's RM1999
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
Quaife's RM, along with Entwistle and probably Waters, are all long gone ot would seem. It would be nice to think they are still around in some form today, possibly with unsuspecting owners, but when you read about them it would certainly seem a long shot.
There are a couple of RM1999 basses that could fit the bill, stripped, with repro parts, but it's also quite possible they may have all been firewood a long time ago...

Quaife still has his, belive it or not, after all these years, Andy. Of all the ones you mention, that might be the only startling result. Entwistle's was not a part of the 2003 Sothebys auction, so, unless it was sold prior by Alan Rogan, is was, yes, long gone. Waters -- my belief is that it is long gone when he could have used it as trade/sale before PF really made any money.

Mike,
I believe Quaife's is a RI bass, or a later "S" example.
Here's his page, quoting the replacement bass.

Really? Not the original one?

Is it documented or does anyone have a guess as to how many RM1999's there were?

Kevin,
The Smith book quotes 126 which I believe is accurate. This only includes 1964 & 67 builds. Not others such as your newly aquired 69 4000 that might have been converted. Your find has proved to me that some other 4001S's may be conversions.
Of that how many are left is subjective.
In 10 years I've been looking out for them, less than 20 have popped up on the net.
For general consumption:
Quaife's original apparently "folded up" at a very cold gig. The one he's pictured with is a later model.
Entwhistle's. True, it wasn't in the auction which leads me to believe it went to "Ric bass heaven"
Roger Waters last known use of his was in the video for "See Emily Play" when he used it as a Cricket bat (long live Gilly!) which leads me to believe it went to "Ric bass heaven" too(unless Andy's green meanie is either Entwhistle's or Water's bass reincarnated. But we don't want that. Then that would mean he would own two(2) of the most legendary basses on the planet!
I have found or owned (in pissy little Perth) two basses and a case, so there must be more out there.
All my "inspired observations and wild guesses". YMMV.
