Interesting! 126 isn't very many when spread around the world!headbanger wrote:Kevin,
The Smith book quotes 126 which I believe is accurate. This only includes 1964 & 67 builds. Not others such as your newly aquired 69 4000 that might have been converted. Your find has proved to me that some other 4001S's may be conversions.
Of that how many are left is subjective.
In 10 years I've been looking out for them, less than 20 have popped up on the net.
For general consumption:
Quaife's original apparently "folded up" at a very cold gig. The one he's pictured with is a later model.
Entwhistle's. True, it wasn't in the auction which leads me to believe it went to "Ric bass heaven"
Roger Waters last known use of his was in the video for "See Emily Play" when he used it as a Cricket bat (long live Gilly!) which leads me to believe it went to "Ric bass heaven" too(unless Andy's green meanie is either Entwhistle's or Water's bass reincarnated. But we don't want that. Then that would mean he would own two(2) of the most legendary basses on the planet!
I have found or owned (in pissy little Perth) two basses and a case, so there must be more out there.
All my "inspired observations and wild guesses". YMMV.
Does the Smith book list the '60's 4000's?

Hmm, just missed it.
Re: Top 10 fantasy celebrity owned Ric basses
I think if anything, that bass production goes down in '69. Over the years, I've seen only a handful of them, and far less than the '68's which do seem to pop up a little more frequently...

I want Lemmy's beat up 'S' with the TV knobs on it.
