You have to be taken by the energy of Dick Dale. He is a tough surf act to follow. It would be interesting to learn more about his musical influences. Some of his arrangements, at least to my ears, use scales that I have associated with Ravi Shankar.

Speaking of whom ...

Life, as with music, often requires one to let go of the melody and listen to the rhythm

Excellent observation Peter. Dick was born in Lebanon and as a youngster exposed to Eastern tonalities. Many of his scales are somwhat middle eastern and he his no stanger to using open strings in a drone like fashion. His pattern of syncopated double picking is according to Dick, influnced by the drumming of Buudy Rich....Dick plays in a very percussive style. Here's an oft posted vid from the movie Back To The Beach..pre-Pulp Fiction.

Thanks for this history of Dick Dale, George. My son overhead me listening to Dick Dale the other day and thought I was "so cool." He made the Pulp Fiction connection immediately. The music of Dick Dale is hard to forget. Oh yes, and cool too!

One of the hottest surf bands on the circuit is Slacktone...due in no small part to everyone's favorite surf drummer and a great guy Dusty Watson...

My pleasure. At one point, Dale went after the band The Lively Ones (I believe) to become the replacement Del-Tones as long as they dropped their own lead player. They refused, instead sticking together and recording many more surf and instrumental songs.

The Lively Ones were very polished..good musicians for sure. Here now is a great band from Japan...The Surf Coasters!

The Astronauts were best known for Baja. The group did not start out as a surf band but ended up riding the first wave, This one is called Firewater...ahhh matching guitars!

Also, the figure carrying the surf board on their first album is not a man, but an airbrushed woman according to the CD liner notes.
