Full width inlays on new basses?

Yeah, yeah. In 5 to 10 years you guys will be lusting for the old inlays and begging Ben to bring them back.

The sad thing is they can't please everybody ...

Have to disagree there - I think people who like the f/w inlays (most of us) would be more inclined now to order a new instrument with the more desirable feature, instead of buying a used 4003 with small inlays.

I agree with John. This is really gonna shake some things up for awhile until RIC officially announces this as a standard feature. You think some people were upset about not getting walnut wings? You know some people will be grumbling over the next 6 months or so as they get the old 4003 at the new price without this highly sought after transitional feature. J.H. has already sighted this for a reason over at RIC's sight for not saying a word about the FWI's.

Agreed. There are so many years worth of Rick basses and guitars out there that came with smaller inlays that they will probably never be collectible. It's such a standard feature that I just couldn't see it happening. Not to mention that I think the vast majority of people on here think that the new inlays are more aesthetically pleasing. Inlays arent that big a deal to me. Its a nice feature though. Maybe this will drive the used price on 4003's without the new inlays down.

Full width inlays or not, those 'shark fin' inlays are a real showstopper.

It's part of what makes a Rick stand out from the crowd.... that and the body shape, neck, sound etc.....

Couldn't agree more. They just jump out at you compared to the poured ones, which kind of disappear into the neck. Of course some will prefer that, but I like my inlays to stand out.

Yes--if they don't stand out, why bother?

Not all poured inlays fade into the fretboard. Because this was an oft-repeated hand operation, the mixes of the pearl toner and resin, along with the pouring techniques, result in a wide variation of opacities, and when properly varnished, most look pretty deep. Some, unfortunately, have too little toner and look dark gray or gray-green. No fix for those, except to re-do.

This is exciting. I liked the look of the inlay material as it was, so the new must really be something to see.
