The critic was Nik Cohn. I believe they were friends, and that Pete was aware of Cohn's love for pinball, which supposedly influenced the pinball sub-theme in Tommy. I understand Cohn is a long-time friend, but I'm not aware of any familial ties.

Correct: Nik Cohn is a British author. He wrote numerous books on rock and pop and wrote the story that gave rise to Saturday Night Fever as well as his classic history of pop music Awopbopaloobop Alopbamboom which he wrote when he was 22 in the late 60's. He was also a friend of Pete's. Nik did not think much of "Tommy" until Pete suggested that the central character became a Bally table king (pinball champion) and that he would write a song that introduced him as such. Pinball Wizard was added and the rest is history.
