My non Rickenbacker basses are few, but I have The 62 Reissue Hofner bass and the Cavern Hofner bass. I also have a Fender American Standard Jazz bass, (Nobody does that 3 tone sunburst like Fender)and I have a WAL 5 String bass (McCartney model).

I guess I'll chime in too...

My stable consists of the following:

1974 Rickenbacker 4001 (Fireglo)
1978 Rickenbacker 3001 (Walnut)
2003 Rickenbacker 4003 (Montezuma Brown)
1990 Fender Jazz Bass (Black)
2001 Gibson Thunderbird (Vintage Sunburst)

And though it may be blasphemous to say, my
T-Bird is a close, close 2nd to the 4003.

I have a Manne Acoustibass. There is a picture of it in the March issue of Bass Player. It is not my bass, but it looks exactly like it. Bass Player did an article on basses from Europe. They gave my Manne a good review. I also have a Carvin LB70, an Eko acoustic electric, a Fender P, and a Washburn RB2802 8 stringer.

Robert, I have been mulling over the idea of buying a Geddy Lee Fender Jazz. I see them go on eBay for around $600. Is that a fair price?

Does anyone out there own a Geddy Lee Fender Jazz bass? I have been watching all of them on eBay for the past month or so. The bass looks great and I've read nothing but good reviews. I'm just hesitating on pulling the trigger because I've never actually played one. I need some honest advice from an owner. Anyone?

Rick - I've played a Geddy Jazz quite a few times and was considering that for my main gig bass to replace a real '72 JB that was just like Geddy's (black, maple neck, badass) My '72 had an un-repairable neck so I parted it out. Anyway the Geddy was pretty sweet and sounded real nice. The only reason I didn't get it was the Stingray popped up on evilbay for $600. The JB I currently have is pretty close, Japanese body, Warmoth neck, rosewood with big block pearl markers like the '72 or '75, BA Bridge. Fender custom shop P/Us. I thought they were a little cheaper than 600 on the used market.

P-Bass - made from parts, p-bass body, no pickgaurd, flame maple cap, mighty might neck- with piccolo strings, for treble octave bass playing.

Over at the Fender Discussion Page a lot of people say the necks on the GLJB tend to have problems with twisting, so you might want to do a bit of research.

A couple of observations, the neck has been shaved down a little, but not that much. Just like any jazz bass they are dinky at the nut and thick at the heel, so letting them acclimatize, is important. The other observation is that they are edgy, with a little less bass, but since I use a Sadowsky outboard preamp a lot, I can easily make up for that. The only quality ding I can really give it is that mine had the second fret on the G and D filed a bit low, so using an E note at that position would buzz if I pressed too hard. I just did a little fret filing on the 3rd and 4th fret on the D to get them down a bit and everything was fine.

One other thing, I've owned a '78 Music Man that laterally twisted, and I know of a couple of the old late 70's Jazz basses that had the lateral twist in them. This was associated with the 3 bolt neck being mounted on bodies with sloppy neck pocket routes, and user's who didn't know how to use the neck tilter feature.
I have literally never seen a Geddy Lee model with a twist, I have heard of some of them having neck relief adjustments having to be done more often, but no twisting. BTW, It's been a year since I've adjusted mine, and problably at least that long before that.

Rick ... I have played several Geddy Lee Jazz basses ... every one was sub standard ... the usa models are better ... anyway I like the look so I built my self a Geddy style jazz bass ... except I made it a five string ...

Individual experience with these models may vary; I don't paint any particular model with too broad a brush. I have had, in my twenty-five years of playing owned more than fifty basses. My experience with guitars spans everything from Alembic's to the cheap Kingston I started with. I can only say that there is good and bad in every brand, some are more known for crud than others are.

I don't, usually, buy sight unseen, mostly bad experiences. So I can say if you've tried it and like the sound and feel and it's cheap enough, go with you gut feeling. If it's a sight unseen deal, just remember, it's more risky, if your willing to take the risk, then it's up to you. The idea is that it's a tool for your expression, you have to be happy with it.
